Cathepsin B is a lysosomal cysteine protease that is structurally similar to the papaya enzyme papain, is one of 11 human cysteine cathepsins. It is a member of the papain-like family of cysteine proteases and is synthesized as a preproenzyme of 339 amino acids with a calculated molecular weight of approximately 38 kDa. High levels of cathepsin B are found in a wide variety of human cancers. Thus, high prevalence of cancer is expected to propel growth of the anti-cathepsin B market. According to the American Cancer Society, in 2019, there will be an estimated 1,762,450 new cancer cases diagnosed and 606,880 cancer deaths in the U.S. Emergence of Covid-19 is expected to offer lucrative growth opportunities for players in the anti-cathepsin B market .
