High Prevalence of Cancer is Expected to Propel Growth of Anti-Cathepsin B Market
Cathepsin
B is a lysosomal cysteine protease that is structurally similar to the papaya
enzyme papain, is one of 11 human cysteine cathepsins. It is a member of the
papain-like family of cysteine proteases and is synthesized as a preproenzyme
of 339 amino acids with a calculated molecular weight of approximately 38 kDa.
High
levels of cathepsin B are found in a wide variety of human cancers. Thus, high
prevalence of cancer is expected to propel growth of the anti-cathepsin B
market. According to the American Cancer Society, in 2019, there will be an
estimated 1,762,450 new cancer cases diagnosed and 606,880 cancer deaths in the
U.S.
Emergence
of Covid-19 is expected to offer lucrative growth opportunities for players in
the anti-cathepsin
B market. Globally, as of 5:42pm CEST, 19 July 2021, there have been
190,597,409 confirmed cases of COVID-19, including 4,093,145 deaths, reported to
WHO. As of 19 July 2021, a total of 3,436,534,998 vaccine doses have been
administered. High levels of cathepsin B are found in macrophages and
osteoclasts, as well as various types of cancer cells, including lung, colon,
prostate, breast, and stomach. Cathepsin B (D1C7Y) XP Rabbit mAb was recently
reported to detect a SARS-CoV-2-related target for research into the mechanisms
of the novel coronavirus.
Cathepsin
B expression is greatly up-regulated in traumatic brain injury animal models,
as well as in trauma patients. High prevalence of traumatic brain injury is
expected to propel growth of the anti-cathepsin B market. According to the
study, ‘Estimating the Global Incidence of Traumatic Brain Injury’ published in
the Journal of Neurosurgery in April 2019, 69 million people worldwide are
estimated to suffer TBI from all causes, annually. Moreover, increasing rate of
infertility is also expected to aid in growth of the anti-cathepsin B market. According
to the National Survey of Family Growth data published in September 2018, 15.5%
of all women who intend to become pregnant are infertile and 6.7% of married
women aged 15 to 44 years are infertile, in the U.S.
Cathepsin
B also players a role in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease. According to the data from Alzheimer's
Association, around 5.7 million people in the U.S. were suffering from
Alzheimer’s disease in 2018. Thus, high
prevalence of traumatic brain injury is expected to propel growth of the anti-cathepsin
B market.
