The Flexible Paper Packaging Market to Witness Strong Growth Due to Rising Shift towards Paper Packaging
Flexible paper packaging is used to protect and package
products. It is lightweight packaging, such as pouches or bags, sealed using
heat or pressure. For instance, stand up pouches with a ziplock, vacuum
pouches, laminated tubes, etc. It is an environmentally friendly packaging solution
that is available in different shapes and colors with durability. Despite
environmental concerns, flexible packaging will continue to be important now
and in the future, but easy-to-recycle solutions, such as flexible paper and
mono-plastics are set to grow. According to the Euromonitor International, in
2019, flexible packaging accounted for around 41% of total packaging worldwide,
diving the growth of the flexible paper packaging market.
Moreover, two largest flexible packaging formats such as
flexible aluminium/plastic (used for coffee packaging) and flexible paper (used
for gum and confectionery). Growth of the flexible
paper packaging market is also driven by the increasing demand for
flexible paper packaging from end-use industries, such as food and beverage
industry, due to increasing awareness about sustainable packaging. For example,
in September 2020, Nestlé planned to make 100% of its packaging recyclable or
reusable by 2025 and to reduce its use of plastics by one-third in the same
period. Around 87% of Nestlé's total packaging by weight and 66% of its total
plastic packaging is already recyclable or reusable.
Moreover, the company announced a series of new initiatives
to increase food-grade recycled plastics in the United States and
first-of-its-kind recyclable paper packaging for Maggi bouillon cubes in
France. Such initiatives by market players or governments are expected to
increase the demand for flexible paper packaging, driving the growth of the flexible
paper packaging market, especially in North America, Europe, and the Asia
Pacific. In January 2020, Nestlé announced today that its popular Smarties
brand is now using recyclable paper packaging for its confectionery products
worldwide. Smarties becomes the first global confectionery brand to switch to
recyclable paper packaging.
Furthermore, the flexible paper packaging market is gaining
huge traction due to increasing development of innovative packaging products. For
example, in April 2018, Sappi launched recyclable flexible paper packaging with
integrated sealing functionality. It is designed to replace hot seal laminates made
from plastic with materials containing a high proportion of renewable raw
materials. As a result, the flexible paper packaging market will increase
steadily over the years due to the increasing demand for flexible paper
packaging in various end-user industries, such as electronics, pharmaceuticals,
e-commerce, and food and beverage.
