Increasing Prevalence of Cancer to Augment Growth of the Glycobiology Market
Glycobiology is the study of the structure, function, and
biology of carbohydrates, also called glycans. It is the general classification
for carbohydrates covalently linked with other chemical species such as
saccharides, lipids, peptides, and proteins. Polysaccharides and glycans play an
important structural role in connective tissues. Glycobiology or glycomics find
a wide variety of application in areas such as industrial applications, therapeutic
application, diagnostic applications, and drug discovery and development. The
growth of the glycobiology market is mainly driven by the increasing prevalence
of cancer worldwide, as glycans impact invasion, angiogenesis, hematogenous
metastasis, and tumor proliferation.
According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer
(IARC), worldwide, one in five people develop cancer during their lifetime, and
one in eight men and one in eleven women die from the disease. Moreover,
according to National Cancer Institute, in 2020, around 1,806,590 new cases of
cancer were expected to be diagnosed in the United States and around 606,520
people were expected to die from the disease. The most common type of cancer on
the list is breast cancer, with 284,200 new cases expected in the United States
in 2021. Thus, with the increasing prevalence of cancer, the demand for cancer
therapeutics is also increasing. This in turn is expected to augment the growth
of the glycobiology
market.
For instance, in 2020, researchers from Universidade do
Porto, Portugal, reported assessment of the role of O-glycan using
glycoengineered gastric cancer models in the detection of CD44v9 by monoclonal
antibodies. O-glycan truncation enhances cancer-related functions of CD44 in
gastric cancer. Furthermore, increasing prevalence of HIV/AIDS is also expected
to propel the glycobiology market growth. According to Joint United Nations
Program on HIV/AIDS, in 20218, 37.9 million people were living with HIV,
worldwide. The aforementioned factors are also expected to drive the glycobiology
market growth.
Rising investments from both government and non-government organizations
have enabled researchers to develop new glycobiology or glycomics tools, as there
is a need for advanced analytical tools/methods to study pathogen and human
glycobiology in disease and health. Hereafter, there has been an increase in proteomics
and biomedical research, leading to the growth of the glycobiology market. For
instance, in 2020, researchers from the University of Minho developed a
neurocompatible strategy to image temporal distribution of glycoproteins during
neuronal development using Cu-free click chemistry. This in turn is also
expected to aid the glycobiology market growth.
