Europe Biodegradable Foodservice Disposable Market Expects Strong Growth Due To Ban on Plastic Disposables
Biodegradable foodservice disposable is a packaging material
widely used for packaging of the food products. These biodegradable products
degrade within a certain period of time after being disposed in the
environment. Biodegradable foodservice disposables are of various types, such
as cutleries, cups and bowls, clamshells, trays and containers, and plates,
among others. These products make the food packaging easy, with greater hygiene
and cleanliness. Biodegradable disposables have been developed in response to
the growing awareness about the negative impact of plastics in the environment.
Government initiatives to ban plastic disposables have
sparked the Europe biodegradable foodservice disposable market growth. For
instance, Germany planned to ban the sale of single-use plastic straws, cotton
buds, cutlery, and food containers from July 2021, aligning with an EU
directive intended to reduce plastic waste. Moreover, according to the German
Association of Local Utilities (VKU), common plastic items make up around 10 to
20% of waste, with takeaway packaging for food and beverages made from polystyrene
having the largest share. Thus, the European Union planned to ban the sale of
single-use plastic from July 2021.
Thus, initiatives taken by governments to encourage the
usage and production of foodservice disposables made from the eco-friendly,
biodegradable products are expected to augment the growth of the Europe
biodegradable foodservice disposable market. Furthermore, According to
Earth.org, the amount of plastic waste in Europe has increased by 13% in the
last decade, and each year, around three million tons of plastic waste is
produced in Germany alone. Thus, the demand for biodegradable disposable is
increasing rapidly with the increasing plastic packaging waste. This, in turn,
is expected to accelerate the Europe biodegradable foodservice disposable
market growth.
Moreover, the increasing consumer awareness about the green
products and shifting consumer preferences for biodegradable, eco-friendly
products are some major factors driving the growth of the Europe biodegradable
foodservice disposable market. Thus, market players are focused on launching
new biodegradable/eco-friendly products in the market. For instance, in 2019,
Jem Packaging launched biodegradable, compostable, fully recyclable packs. The
packaging solutions that Jem offers are degradable, in around 8 to 14 weeks. Thus,
the increasing launch of such new and innovative packaging solution is expected
to propel the Europe biodegradable foodservice disposable market growth.
However, the rate of decomposition of biodegradable
disposables is depends entirely on the population of microorganisms, temperature,
and moisture content in a specific environment. The aforementioned factor is
expected to hamper the adoption of such products to some extent. Thereby,
restraining the Europe biodegradable foodservice disposable growth.
